The hill affectionately named “Bertha” was the same, but the course wasn’t. It proved to be a major test for the Living Word Lutheran High School boys on Saturday, September 17 at the St. Lawrence Seminary in Mount Calvary. The boys managed a 9th place finish out of 20 teams.
The only medal winner for the boys was Zach Ziemann placing 21st with a time of 18:28. Other notable performances were turned in by Caleb Ashebrook and freshman Shane Welter. Ashebrook claimed the third spot on the team with gutsy hill running edging teammate Matt Rosenheimer by a mere fifteen seconds. Meanwhile, Welter ran his strongest race of the season and moved up to the sixth spot. The boys now have two freshman in the top six. The future looks promising for the Timberwolves as these freshman continue to improve and challenge the older runners. JV runner, Zach Scherzer, overcame a fall and finished his race bruised and bloody.

Times were slower but the results put the Living Word Lutheran High School girls on top of the world on Saturday, September 17 at the St. Lawrence Seminary in Mount Calvary. The girls placed 3rd overall among seventeen other schools. The only teams that beat them were D-2 Freedom and the second ranked D-3 team, St. Mary Springs.
The course was about a minute slower for the top runners. It contained more hills including “Bertha.” Conditions were also slippery. In fact, several girls went down early in the race including Lauren Weiss, Living Word’s third runner. Lauren went on to place 18th and earn a medal behind her teammates, Becca Gosselin and Stephanie Rutkowski. Gosselin appeared relaxed and in control the whole way placing 3rd.
The most improved performances went to Rachel Gosselin and Emilie Wipperfurth. Gosselin was just fifteen seconds behind Katie Ziemann who placed 26th, one runner away from a medal. Wipperfurth ran the JV race but her time put her sixth on the team overall and earned a medal for the race.
