Living Word Lutheran High School’s cross country coaches were pretty confident. Coach Aaron Staub was already booking rooms in Wisconsin Rapids, site of the state cross country meet, in June. Meanwhile, coach Kurt Ziemann was saying before the sectional race, “This is a race for the second spot to state. We have the first.” And so the girls did. They ran off with their second straight sectional championship at UW-Parkside on October 22. The girls outdistanced their foes scoring 46 points with the nearest competitor, Kenoshs-St. Joseph, at 67.
The girls achieved their goal with strong pack running in the beginning and a good strong finish in the end. Becca Gosselin regained her form battling back from a little tendonitis and cramping at conference to finish third overall. She finished behind the top girl in the country, Molly Seidel, and Molly’s standout sister. It was a huge relief for Becca to get a race like this after her struggle at conference.
Following Becca came the “fearsome foursome” of Stephanie Rutkowski, this year’s conference champion, Lauren Weiss, Rachel Gosselin, and Katie Ziemann. Of the four, Rachel Gosselin stood out nearly breaking her season best on a much more difficult course. All these girls have been solid runners all year. Dressed in their black Living Word tops and shorts, they are a blanket of black that spells certain doom for opposing teams. But even in their success, Living Word’s coaches still insist they haven’t run their best race yet.
There are two other sophomores itching to join the spotlight. Annalise Jasinski and Emily Wipperfurth, both out for the sport for the first time, ran strong races as well. Wipperfurth even set a personal best. As these girls gain experience and training, the team may have to change their sophomore group name from “fearsome foursome” to “the sensational six.” The team travels to Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday for the state meet. They hope to and should improve on their tenth place overall last year.
