The boys cross country team found out what it’s like to run without graduated runners, David Rutkowski and Jon Buettner. It cost them a couple of places in the team standings. The boys finished fourth overall at the WLA Invite in Fond du Lac on Tuesday, August 30. The race was very close, though. The boys were just 20 points from first. Despite this, the team showed a marked improvement in times from last year in cool but rainy conditions.
Zach Ziemann and Johann Hinck moved up and filled David and Jon’s spots from last year. Zach placed 5th overall. His time looks to be one of the top times at this meet in school history. Johann also topped last year’s effort finishing and medaling in 9th place. Third runner, Matt Rosenheimer almost shaved two minutes off his last year’s time placing 20th. Freshman Chase Uden ran his first ever race just behind Caleb Aschebrook to round out the top five. Austin Meier and Zach Scherzer finished strong in their first races as well.
In the junior varsity, freshman Shane Welter ran an impressive first race in slippery conditions due to race covering the course in 24:17. Garrett Stremski almost beat his person record from all of last year. So things should be interesting in the fight for those varsity spots this year. The team’s next race is at Concordia University on Saturday.
