The Living Word Lutheran High School boys cross country knew it would be tough to run without their top two runners from last year, but they appear right on schedule to turn heads next year with their fifth place finish at the Midwest Classic Conference meet on Saturday, October 15 at Lake Country. Individually, Junior Zach Ziemann earned all-conference with his 10th place finish.
With the exception of Ziemann who missed his personal record on a much harder course by seven seconds and freshman Shane Welter who missed by six seconds, the boys team never seemed to get into any kind of rhythm until the end of the race. This was when most of the boys out kicked their opponents to the finish. Exciting as that was, the boys were not satisfied with their successes this year. With the team being very young with just one senior, they seem determined as ever to beat their fifth place next year.
The lone senior, Johann Hinck, finished in the top twenty completing his very successful conference running career. His dedication and team leadership was very valuable especially for the younger and inexperienced runners. If he can run with Ziemann at sectionals, he will have a chance to lengthen his running career by going to state. Anything can happen.
